The Dell G7 15 has a slick look and good gaming output for a budget gaming laptop, but the monitor lacks pop.

Any goodbye holds the promise of a promising hello.

That's how the Dell Inspiron Gaming line works.

The company recently phased out its entry-level gaming laptop line in favour of the new G Series brand, which includes the G7 15 (starting at $849, tested at $1,049).

The G7 looks like nothing Dell has ever produced, with a sports-car-like appearance and eye-catching colour.
However, you get noisy audio and specs capable of providing decent midlevel gaming output in addition to the fresh look.
The G7 15 isn't on our list of best gaming laptops because of its dim display and slow hard drive.
However, because it has a lot of power for a low price, it makes our list of the best inexpensive gaming laptops under $1,000.

Design:

Dell should have used the winter white on the interior of the device, particularly with the blue font on the keyboard.
Nonetheless, resting my wrists and palms against the smooth, black aluminum surface was a delight.
The bezels around the 15.6-inch panel are a little wide, but the reflective Dell logo inserted in the bottom border is a nice touch.

The 15.3 x 10.8 x 0.9-inch G7 is on the heavy side of the scale, weighing 6.3 pounds.
The PowerSpec 1510 (6.5 pounds, 15.3 x 10.8 x 1.3 inches), Acer Predator Helios 300 (5.5 pounds, 15.4 x 10.5 x 1.5 inches), and MSI GV62 8RE are both slimmer than that (4.9 pounds, 15.1 x 10.2 x 1.1 inches).

While the G7 lacks many ports, it does have enough slots, jacks, and inputs to accommodate a small gaming combat station.

Two USB 3.1 ports, a Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI 2.0, and a headphone jack are located on the right.

On the left, there's a USB 3.1 socket, an Ethernet port, a 2-in-1 card reader, a Noble lock slot, and the power jack.

Display:

If only the G7's 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 monitor was as bright and colorful as the lid.
Geralt's bone-white hair in The Witcher 3: Wild Chase normally pops against a jet-black sky, but those ashen tresses seemed quite listless on the G7.
Although I could see the botchling's sickly pink, glistening skin, it had turned a ruddy crimson, concealing some of the bluish veins underneath.

I could see the stitching and mesh in Starr Carter's Jordans while watching The Hate U Offer trailer, though the red was a little darker than anticipated.
The red light party's color was also off, making it seem to be a magenta meeting instead.

The screen could only replicate 62 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is significantly less than the 106 percent norm for standard gaming laptops.
The GV62 and Helios did somewhat better, at 72 and 81 percent, respectively.
With a score of 113 points, the PowerSpec came out on top.

The screen on the G7 performed poorly in the brightness comparison, averaging 232 nits.
The average brightness of mainstream gaming laptops is 296 nits.
The Helios shone brighter at 226 nits, while the GV62 and PowerSpec shone brighter at 240 and 306 nits, respectively.

If you want a better view on this device, we suggest upgrading to a 4K display setup, which starts at $1,399.

Audio:

Astonishingly powerful for the price is the G7 pair of front speakers.
They flooded my bedroom with Kevin Ross' seductive sound "Don't Go."
The rich tenor was accompanied by clear wind chimes and sharp percussion.
The keyboard and horns were a little blown, but I could clean up a little by switching on the R&B pre-set with Waves MaxxAudio Pro.

In The Witcher 3, my horse's hoofs beated steadily on the dirt road when I resumed my hunt for Bloody Baron"s wife and daughter.
I happened in a burning barn and heard the crackling and pops of the wooden building sacrificed in the distance as an alarm bell rang.

Keyboard and Touchpad:

Although I like the G7's island-style keyboard's blue font and dazzling cerulean backlighting, I find the typing experience to be missing.

The keyboard was a little awkward to type on, with a shallow 0.94 millimeters of key travel (our agreed minimum is 1.5mm) and a respectable 61 grams of actuation (our minimum is 60g).

I found myself hitting a wall faster than planned, making it difficult to keep a strong typing pace.

On the 10fastfingers typing test, I only managed 56 words per minute, way below my normal 70 wpm.

The touchpad's 4.1 x 3.1-inch size outperformed the keyboard in terms of recording multitouch movements like pinch-zoom, three-finger click, and flick.

When pushed, the touchpad's bottom edges created a satisfying click.

Graphics, Gaming and VR:

The G7 is more than capable of playing games on high settings thanks to its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU with 6GB of VRAM.
You won't get the same frame rates as you can with a full-fledged 1060 graphics card, however.

I used the trap spell Yrden to make a group of wrathful wraith take physical form.
When they did, I launched a barrage of fast attacks with my silver blade, reducing my enemies to dust at a frame rate of 53 frames per second and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 on Ultra settings.

The laptop scored 35 frames per second in the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark, barely missing the standard gaming norm of 32 frames per second.
With 36 frames per second, the GV62 and its entire 1060 GPU outperformed the Helios (GTX 1060) and PowerSpec (Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU) obtained 67 and 56 fps, respectively.

The G7 fared better in the Hitman test, averaging 63 frames per second (fps), just a few frames below the 65-fps norm.
The score was comparable to the Helios (64 frames per second), PowerSpec (60 frames per second), and GV62 (51 fps).

The G7 reached 45 frames per second on the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark, which is lower than the 52 frames per second group average.
The PowerSpec managed 60 frames per second, while the Helios and GV62 managed 49 and 48 frames per second, respectively.
The G7 outperformed the 60-fps average in the Middle-Earth: Shadow of War simulation, achieving 67 frames per second.

In case you're curious, augmented reality is supported by Max-Q graphics cards.
On the SteamVR efficiency test, the G7 scored 6.3 out of 11 points, outperforming the 5.6 average.
The PowerSpec maxed out the test, while the GV62 and Helios provided 7.3 and 7.1, respectively.

Overall Performance:

The G7's 2.2-GHz Core i7-8750H cpu, which comes with 16GB of RAM, is capable of multitasking.
I watched an episode of Glow Season 2 on Netflix while watching Twitch streams in Google Chrome with 12 other tabs open, including Slack, TweetDeck, and YouTube, and Windows Defender ran a full-system search.

The G7 continued to dominate on Geekbench 4, with a score of 19,516, which outperformed the standard gaming average of 16,695.
The GV62 scored 13,689 with an Intel Core i5-8300H processor, while the PowerSpec and Helios scored 14,223 and 13,587 respectively with last-generation Core i7-7700HQ processors.

The G7 matched 65,000 pairs of names and addresses in 41 seconds on the Excel test, exceeding the 0:46 average.
At 0:59 and 1:08, respectively, the GV62 and PowerSpec completed the mission.

The G7 comes with a 1TB hard drive spinning at 5,400 rpm, which is plenty of room but sluggish.
The machine duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in 50 seconds, at a transmission rate of 101.8 megabytes per second.
That's slower than the 291.5 MBps average, which includes 124 MBps from the GV62 (128GB M.2 SSD), 188.5 MBps from the Helios (256GB M.2 SSD), and 391.5 MBps from the PowerSpec (256GB NVMe SSD).

The G7 transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 10 minutes and 40 seconds during the HandBrake test, which was quicker than the 12:01 average.
The Dell also beat the GV62 and PowerSpec, which finished at 13:09 and 14:00, respectively.

 Battery Life:

When it comes to gaming laptop battery life, Dell and Alienware get some of the highest scores.
The G7 is no different, lasting 5 hours and 37 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery scale, which involves uninterrupted web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness.
That time was faster than the 3:48 mainstream gaming average, the 4 hours of the PowerSpec, and the 2:05 of the GV62.
The Helios, on the other hand, outlasted all else, clocking in at 6:01.

Heat:

In Witcher 3, I spent 15 minutes battling a wraith while trying to transform a botchling into a lubberkin.
I calculated key points on the laptop for heat after the time had passed.
The temperature on the touchpad was 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is below our 95-degree comfort standard.
The undercarriage measured 112 degrees, while the middle of the keyboard measured 92 degrees.
My lap didn't feel overheated thanks to the plastic panel.

We replicated the test after things had cooled down, except this time we had the laptop play a full-screen 1080p movie.
The touchpad, the center of the keyboard, and the bottom of the keyboard were all calculated at 78, 90, and 93 degrees, respectively.

Webcam:

In a pinch, the G7's 720p embedded webcam suffices.
I wouldn't recommend using this camera for livestreaming because of the visual noise and fairly accurate colour, but it'll do for a video chat or two.
The reddish orange in my dress was well captured by the camera, but the light green took on a grayish shade.
At the very least, I could see my hair's fluffy ringlets.

Software and Warranty:

Dell should follow its sister brand Alienware's example to hold bloatware to a bare minimum.
Games like Candy Crush Soda Saga, Candy Crush Saga, Cooking Fever, Bubble Witch Saga, and Hidden City: Hidden Object Adventure are taking up space thanks to Windows 10.
There's also a Netflix connection and a deal for a year's worth of free Dropbox storage, which is the most valuable of the lot.

The Dell-branded app is more feature-rich.
You have Power Manager, for example, which you can use to monitor and preserve the battery health of your notebook.
Mobile Connect helps you to reach your smartphone (and mobile apps) from your PC, and Help & Support is a resource for basic laptop questions and issues, including how to use Windows and how to set up and personalize your laptop.

Killer Control Center, for example, is a gaming-centric software that allows you to set network bandwidth priorities for your games and track performance.
There's also Nvidia GeForce Experience, which contains software like Battery Boost and Game Optimization to help you get the most out of your gaming experience.

A one-year extended warranty with mail-in support is included with the Dell G7 15.

Configurations:

I put the Dell G7 ($1,049) through its paces.
It has a 2.2GHz Core i7-8750H cpu, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB 5,400-rpm hard disk, and a 6GB VRAM Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU.

A 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-8300H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB 5,400-rpm hard disk, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU with 4GB of VRAM are included in the $849 base package.

Is your power supply insufficient?
The $1,599 model has an overclockable 2.9-GHz Intel Core i9-8950 CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD with a 1TB 5,400-rpm hard disk, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU with 6GB of VRAM.

If you want a bigger screen, the $1,399 edition, which has the same specs as my review device but adds a 128GB SSD, is the way to go.

Bottom Line:

Dell's G Series notebook is a bold foray into the future that keeps a few positive examples from the past in mind.
The G7 15 is visually distinct from either the Inspiron or Alienware brands, giving it its own identity.
The notebook, which costs $1,049, provides solid overall efficiency for all of your multitasking needs.
But, most significantly, thanks to its Max-Q GTX 1060, budget-conscious gamers can enjoy graphically challenging games at high frame rates.
What I wish for is a more cheerful computer and a more friendly keyboard.

If you don't mind owning a laptop with an older CPU, the Acer Predator Helios 300 is a good option.
You get a machine with a complete GTX 1060 GPU, longer battery life, and a marginally improved display for the same price as the G7 15.
The G7 15 can, however, be at the top of your list if you're looking for an inexpensive gaming device with a bold style.
